Using Your Photos To Tell Your Story
Plan to Provide 10 Photos Per Minute of Video
St. Louis, MO – June 20, 2022 – One of the keys to a memorable “on screen” story are amazing visuals. It makes sense right? You have to have visuals to take full advantage of a visual medium like video. But it isn’t just visuals by themselves.
If it was, then it could be a slide show or just your family photos set to music. That might be ideal depending on how it is going to be used. Families often prepare slide show videos like that to be shown at a memorial service or wake for a loved one.
It is totally appropriate to the occasion, but it isn’t the type of video storytelling STORYSMART does. We would rather help you tell that person’s story through the words of those who loved that person. We do that by interviewing people, following our proprietary STORYSMART brand journalism model.
To this day, I wish I had a video that told me more about who my dad was as man. He died when I was five. I still feel that sense of loss and not knowing.
I wish I knew him better. That feeling fuels my desire to have STORYSMART help others fill – in some small way – that gap through the power of story. Our brains respond to stories. It is how we remember others and events in our life.
We believe everyone matters and deserves to have their story told “on screen” in an amazing, professional, and memorable way. Our service is simple and revolutionary at the same time.
We provide you with an experienced professional to tell your story in amazing way “on screen”, but you own it as though you did it yourself. Simple. Revolutionary.
There is something about having someone else tell your story for you that is special. Especially if they are trained filmmaker or television reporter.
There is both an art and science to telling stories on screen. The fact that Hollywood could spend a hundred million on a movie that misses the mark proves that point.
There are countless ways to elevate your story or to screw it up. This post is about enrolling you to help us help you tell a visually beautiful story by having you share images with us. I’m talking about your family photos.
The fact that you or your parents or another broke out your camera to capture a photo means they thought something worth remembering was taking place. Think about that for a second. You took the photo for a reason. It was to hold onto a memory.
Our StorySMART approach is designed to ensure you get a memorable story that connects with your target audience. There are essentially two foundational elements to our approach to telling your story. They are equally important.
The first is an on camera interview or interviews depending on the nature of the story. Our experienced journalists put people at ease in having a conversation on camera to tell a story. Through an honest conversation, we get authentic interviews that connect.
But it doesn’t just stop there. We need visuals. If someone is talking about an amazing vacation they took with their family, we want to see those visuals. That is why we require all of our clients to share their photographs or home movies before we conduct our interviews.
We do that because we want to know what visuals we have, so we can work around what we don’t have by shooting generic b-roll of the people we are interviewing. We lead our clients through a proprietary process that is designed to make it turnkey simple to tell a beautiful story. But some of the work falls on the client to get their photos organized and digitized for us in advance.
It should go without say, but I’ll say it anyway. Telling your story well is a partnership with you. We can’t carry the full load ourselves. We need your help in doing it really well.
More often than not, it comes down to having our clients organize their photos in advance of undertaking the story. We like to have those images in advance, because we know what we have and what we might need to fill for in shooting the story. If we don’t have images of your vacation, but it is central to your story, we may need to fill with some stock footage or some other creative way.
We have developed a very simple process to help our clients share their images with us. As we grow, we expect to invest in technology that will allow us to take it to the next level for families. When I tell people we are a geospatial technology company, much of it comes back to this one little – highly important element – photos.
Getting photos digitized is just one part of the challenge. We also need them tagged or named or foldered in a way that the storyteller knows what they are. It isn’t enough to get the photos. We need to know who is in the photo and have the full context to use them correctly in your video. If we have to spend lots of time going back and forth with you on everything it will cost you a lot of money and waste a lot of our time.
Once we build our new technology platform with facial recognition, machine learning and artificial intelligence, we see the day families will upload their entire archive of images to be tagged and organized. While I can’t wait until we have that, today we are deploying some basic things to help us help you.
