A Video Storytelling Ghost Protocol
Owning A Professional Video Story Isn't A Mission Impossible
St. Louis, MO – January 11, 2023 -
Having your story brought to the screen in the high-quality professional way you deserve while still owning isn’t a mission impossible. Quite to the contrary, if you follow the ghost protocol you can connect powerfully with your target audience with a story you will own forever.
Before you start jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch or begin to repel down from the ceiling in excitement, it is important to understand some basic STORYSMART principals and what I mean by “ghost protocol”.
In some respects, my personal ghost protocol has been the zen like approach I take to being ghosted by others, but this post isn’t about that. When I use the term ghost in the context of video storytelling, I’m referring to a concept that is MUCH MORE commonplace in another area of storytelling - writing.
At STORYSMART, we believe you deserve to own your story told well on screen. That really includes two distinct values the guide everything we do. Value number one is owning your story. Literally.
When we say “own your story” we mean take responsibility for the narrative and own the intellectual property rights (i.e. the copyright) on it. We probably have you at hello on that one.
That probably doesn’t seem like a mission impossible right? Everyone I talk to about this idea is on board right away.
It really is the second value that to date has been more likely to self-destruct in less than sixty seconds. That value is to tell it Well on screen.
It isn’t enough to have a great story. To make it great for an audience it needs to be told well. That is why almost every celebrity who writes a book doesn’t write it themselves. They hire a ghost writer to write their story.
If you see a best-selling book by someone famous, more likely than not they were not the one chugging coffee and chain-smoking cigarettes hunched over the Smith Corona typewriter at 3AM finishing the manuscript. No, they likely worked with a highly skilled writer who interviewed them and spent countless hours with them to put their story into a coherent, well-written narrative you and I enjoy reading.
I call it the celebrity book ghost protocol. It is a brilliant model that is a win-win-win for all involved. The celebrity gets their story told professionally, yet still owns it. The ghost-writer gets great paying work, and the audience gets to read a well written story.
In the simplest terms that is what we offer our clients with video. You get a professional storyteller who knows how to bring an amazing story to the screen that connects emotionally with your target audience. And you own as though you did yourself. Pretty cool huh?
While this simple ghost protocol is behind everything, we do with STORYSMART, it should be part of your video storytelling too. If you are a brilliant video storyteller in your own right, then DIY your story. But let’s be honest, few of us – me included – can produce a DIY video we actually want to watch, much less remember.
You deserve better. To do justice to your story on screen, you need the right skills and equipment, not mention time and talent. You deserve to have a professional craft your story in a way that makes it come alive on screen and within the hearts and minds of your target audience.
You can make that happen – it isn’t a mission impossible – if you simply employ your own ghost protocol and are STORYSMART about it.
