Know Your WHY
Be purpose driven. Focus on what really matters.
St. Louis, MO – May 27, 2022 –
The Uvalde school shooting is a heartbreaking reminder of what matters most. It has been awful watching the news reports coming out of Texas.
For me, death and tragedy are a reset button. When I experience it personally or witness it in the way we all have this week, it puts me in touch with what really matters. Like it or not, my emotions come to the surface too.
I’ve been this way since my dad died suddenly when I was five.
I've seen the pattern repeat in me throughout my life. A death of loved one. Oklahoma City. 9-11. The Kirkwood Shooting. Sandy Hook. Now Uvalde.
I am heartbroken, sad and angry. Candidly, I couldn’t agree more with Steve Kerr. He said it all.
I was responsible for writing so many scripts and press releases tied to tragedy when I was with the St. Louis Cardinals. After watching Coach Kerr, I couldn’t get them out of my head.
As someone who immediately turns to trying to fix problems when they arise, it is frustrating that we have failed to address the gun problem. While I could write a book about our failed leadership and broken system, I am not adding my voice to the crowd. Instead, I want to talk about finding meaning in what you do each day.
At times like these, be sure you know your WHY.
Ted Talk gurus like comedian Michael Jr.
and author Simon Sinek
do a great job of conveying why finding your WHY matters. In a nutshell, your WHY is your purpose.
My WHY is a WHO named Charlie.
He is my eleven-year-old 5th grader. Charlie is a budding creative with an entrepreneurial drive who could fit right in at STORYSMART. There is no question he is my purpose, as well as the lens through which I venture to see our world and the rapidly changing communications landscape.
Charlie isn’t growing up in the corded phoned analog world I did. And advertising, communication and marketing folks need to stop pretending the world is the way it was when they were coming of age.
How we connect, process and value things is changing very rapidly. I believe the last two years has had a profound impact on societal values whether we realize or not. When you are living collectively through something it is hard to see it, but I'm sure we will look back on this period as significant in shifting our values.
On a personal level, the pandemic pushed me into seeing that personal and business values must align.
We spend a lot of our life working. Maybe too much. That said, you need to love what you do. Find purpose and meaning in it. I think that is what is behind the “great resignation”. It is a realignment of values.
Making money is important, but it isn’t nearly as important as how
you make it. And who you work with.
Trust me when I tell you that founding a startup in a small-minded community that is slow to embrace change and innovation isn’t my best path to making money. Just ask my family. We have had to make sacrifices. I’ve traded paycheck security to pursue a passion and to follow my own path with no regrets.
STORYSMART was born of the foundational belief that everyone matters and deserves to be remembered.
We believe that everyone deserves to have their story told professionally. And they deserve to own that story forever.
Our WHAT is providing storytelling for all. Our WHY is because everyone matters and deserves to be remembered.
My personal WHY is Charlie. And my professional WHY is rooted in losing my dad as a boy. I know he mattered and deserves to be remembered. Including by my son Charlie. While I can't do anything about my personal circumstances, I can help others by building a company that will empower them to tell their story or that of a loved one, living or not.
That drive is what is behind building our national network of skilled video storytellers to provide storytelling for all.
At STORYSMART, our WHY informs everything we do. It drives our WHO, WHAT, HOW, WHEN & WHERE.
We want to help you tell your story so you will always be remembered. And we want you to own it. But it doesn’t stop there.
While we are technically a geospatial technology storytelling startup, our business is really about people. Not just algorithms and robots. Real people.
And when I say people, I’m not just talking about the clients we help, I am referring to the amazingly talented creatives that make up our growing storyteller network.
We value the storyteller as much as we do the client we help. We also take pride in the story and value storytelling integrity. We don’t want to just turn in our homework. We want to get an A. Every time.
If you spend any time with a creative person, you will find that they put a little bit of themselves into every project they do. I see that with Charlie. I see how he loves creating – whether it is finger boards, painted shoes or illustrations, he puts himself out there. He will excitedly share his work with me. And then, a short time later, he will feel that it isn’t good enough or could be better.
I will be like that with this blog post. And everything I do creatively.
Talk to any creator at any level and you will find them hard wired the same way. It is the essence of who they are.
I have told Charlie that the point of creating art is to express yourself. And to enjoy the process of creating it. Do what you love to do I told him. It took me far too long to realize that fact.
Charlie will look at his work and compare it to others. He will see artists with more refined skills and be disappointed in himself. But those others also inspire him to keep working on his craft.
The same thing can be said for each storyteller in our growing network. They are always looking to improve their craft. They can’t help but compare their work with others. Hopefully drawing inspiration and motivation to continue to improve.
That artist mindset and talent is what clients who hire us are buying when they come to STORYSMART. They are getting an artist. They are getting professional who cares deeply about their craft and doing a good job telling a story.
We know our storyteller will do a better job helping our client tell their story than the client would doing it themselves. That is the essence of our premium video storytelling as a service.
We are building those values into our proprietary process. We value honesty and integrity as much as quality and professionalism in production.
That is why we adopted an ethical credo that drives our STORYSMART WAY.
If you work with us, you will see how our values are woven into our proprietary approach. We believe in win-win-win. We seek a balanced eco system that celebrates and rewards talent, while engaging that talented artist to create something beautiful for another person who will own as though they created the art themselves.
The truth is that we see the video storyteller – our multimedia television journalist or independent filmmaker as much as our client as we do for wonderful clients who help us keep the lights on.
Our storytellers have a gift they are sharing. They have developed their craft over time. They are artists just like my son Charlie. #MyWHY
