Storytelling for a Scholarship

High School Athletes Use Video To Stand Out To College Recruiters
St. Louis, MO – April 7, 2022
– Like all of us, college recruiters increasingly rely on digital technology to do their work.
High school athletes that aspire to play sports at the next level have been turning to video and social media to get noticed by colleges. Go to any high school game and you will see someone (or multiple people) shooting video. The schools themselves do it. The elite club sports do it. Parents are all over it.
Services like Hudl
TraceUp
and Spiideo
are popping up all over the place. It makes sense.
When I was with the Cardinals our scouting team used video a lot. It was an efficient and effective way to scout.
So game highlights are great. But where do you put them?
When my brother in law reached out to help my nephew who is a gifted soccer player, I learned that athletes tweet directly at college coaches to share game highlights. Makes sense.
But that by itself falls a bit short. From my vantage point, everything needs to start with a website for your student.
If you are a parent or student reading this then I want to make this key point – buy your URL now. When I say your URL, I mean your name as a website address. Do it now. It can be your recruiting website now and your resume page when you graduate college. Or it could be your pro page if you go pro. Bottom line - it is your brand. You are your brand and in today's world that means website.
You can use the website to tell your story and to house all your highlights. The last thing you want to have happen is be responsible for some coach spraining his or her thumb trying to scroll through twitter to see all your highlights.
The best practice is to build a simple website to house everything. By all means tweet at the coach, but send them back to your website to learn more. Your website can contain all your highlights and a simple video story that tells them who you are.
It can also include all your contact information so they know how to get ahold of you to offer that full ride scholarship.
For an example, please check out the website we put together for my nephew. It isn’t fancy, but it gets the job done. Most importantly, it includes a short video story that will give recruiters a sense of Michael.
Most parents focus on doing highlight videos to music. That is good. But it stops short of telling the complete story of their child.
We specialize in using sports reporters and other television journalists to help our clients tell their stories in an honest, authentic and high-quality, premium way. You can see examples of our stories on our website.
We follow a proprietary process that includes a simple StorySMART intake where we identify the purpose of the story, target audience and all the other details that should be included in video story.
StorySMART specializes in premium storytelling with a purpose. The purpose might be holding onto these special memories or it might be securing a scholarship. And it isn't just for athletes. Your student might be a great singer, musician or artist. You should tell that story.
Let us know how we can help you hold onto these memories or stand out to college recruiters.
