The Secret To Authentic Video Storytelling
It Is Common Sense But Not Commonly Used
St. Louis, MO – October 21, 2022 – The equivalent of the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, or the social/digital equivalent of the Siskel & Ebert “Two Thumbs Up” is having the authentic label affixed to your video story.
Authenticity is the gold standard of good storytelling online.
All brands want their video storytelling to be authentic. Candidly, as consumers, we crave authentic in everything we consume. Nothing turns us off more than slick, salesy inauthentic content. It makes us want to gag.
I have my barf bag in my pocket whenever I plan to surf my social.
These days I can’t log onto any of my social feeds without being forced fed a diet of crappy ads that makes me feel friendless. My Facebook feed is the absolute worst.
It is ad after ad.
It sucks.
It is the social media equivalent of your voicemail being full of messages from that slick dude Scam Likely. You hope to hear from your real friends, but there is that creepy Scam Likely hounding you.
Sadly, I suspect you can relate to my situation.
To that end, I want to share our trade our secret to authentic video storytelling. I don’t mean that literally my lawyer friends….you can put away that cease & desist letter and settle in to learn something about authentic storytelling.
After I tell you our secret, you are likely to do the old “oh well, that?” demurring to the concept. You might say “So what. Of course” and then check out on this post. But don’t.
I am building this up a bit because I didn’t see the forest for the trees either.
This basic tactic was so common sense to me and part of what I’ve done for over a decade that it took a while for me to realize that this could be the STORYSMART equivalent of our Big Mac special sauce.
It is common sense, but it isn’t common in most video storytelling online. It is rarely used. To prove my point, just watch videos online.
The market really has two basic polar extremes.
On one end of the market, you have the over produced, polished, expensive corporate looking professional videos that tell a story but ring hollow (i.e. are in-authentic).
On the other end, you have the DIY (do it yourself) video that is poorly shot, but authentic. It is so crappy looking that you know it is real.
There is little in between.
It is a rare unicorn when you see a nicely produced beautiful video that is also authentic. I’m a firm believer you can have both. Especially when you use this one little secret.
The secret is to conduct an interview .
Yes. That is right. The secret is an interview.
Instead of writing a script and having your spokesperson say a rehearsed line, interview a spokesperson on camera. Have an honest, unscripted conversation. Use a good journalist or someone with high emotional intelligence, good listening skills and an ability to pull out a story from the person they are interviewing.
That is our secret. We work with television journalists and journalist filmmakers because they have a proven ability to interview people on camera to tell an honest story. They have a nose for news and are skilled interviewers.
It is a high-integrity approach that is common sense. It works. And you can do it too. The key is to make sure your interviewer has the right skills and is prepared.
When you do that, the magic happens. You want the person you are interviewing to forget they are on camera and to be real. Be honest. Be themselves. Be authentic.
The secret to authentic video storytelling is the interview.
